Section 1 - The Past

Sophisticated native civilizations were in existence long before Columbus accidentally arrived to the New World. There is considerable speculation with regard to the origin and timeline of the arrival of the native people to the continent. Scientific discovery indicates that native tribal history may be much older than has been generally accepted. Native people also have their own versions of origin and time.

Section 2 - The Facts of Life

American Indian population, tribes and reservation demographics are complex and in perpetual transition. Only 22% of the American Indian population live on reservations - which means that 78% live off reservation.  Three out of 4 American Indians do not marry other Indians.  Do the math and project those numbers a couple of generations.  The 78% will become disconnected and the 22% will be severely diminished unless there are some dramatic changes with regard to blood quantum requirements of tribal membership.

Almost everyone agrees that American Indians have legitimate grievances that have not been equitably resolved, however, most American Indians issues are politically obscured by current national and international crises.

Section 3 - The Future

The only thing for sure in this life is change. Adaptability is short-term evolution that is an absolute for the survival of a species or a civilization.  American Indians can no longer rely on the benevolence of the United States government for the necessities of life. They must take control of their destiny by education, political solidarity and economic independence.

Section 4 - Genealogy

The research of your "family tree" as a document for future generations is up to you.  There are several necessary steps to begin your genealogy research.

Section 5 - Study Guide

The Study Guide has 4 parts that total 38 questions. The format is fill-in blanks with follow-up essay questions that may be answered on a separate sheet. When the reader can answer most of the questions, they will know more truth about American Indians than 99.9% of the people in the country.

Section 6 - Bibliography

A few short years ago, the research for the map and book was compiled mostly from public libraries, museum libraries and agency reports. Most of the original research reports and lists are no longer available in print.

The Internet has dramatically changed the way we do research. The majority of the revisions and updated information for this printing are compiled from the Internet.
